Angels, demons, abominable horrors from beyond the stars, evil sorcerers, witches, the walking dead... all these and more lie just below the surface of their world. Typical humans are completely oblivious to all of this, thanks to the efforts of organizations like the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Numbering among these hidden secrets are the rumors for giant ant colonies far below the deserts of California, Baja and northern Mexico. Cheryl, as she arbitrarily decided to call herself by pointing at a magazine article, was found floating in an underground pool in Carlsbad caverns several years ago. She had been dutifully working at the BPRD ever since.
Point in Canon: Post-Hellboy 2
Personality: Cheryl is far from what most would consider a giant ant monster to act like. She's upbeat, chipper, fastidious, somewhat parochial in her mindset, extremely hard-working, and remarkably efficient at her tasks. She loves candy, fruit, and all things sugary. She also has a fondness for flowers, and is rather good at flower-arranging and other forms of creative design, although she doesn't believe what she creates is very good.
Being as she is, a giant ant, she has a very strong instinct to try to belong to something. The BPRD and its underground tunnels were a fine surrogate hive for her, and in Sirocco she'd almost immediately seek out something just as large, comforting, and stable to belong to. She also has a profound instinctual desire to never rock the boat, and she tends to avoids confrontations at all costs, unless whoever it is is disturbing the harmony of her "hive".
She isn't trained to fight, although she's extremely strong, strong enough to throw around small cars. She can also fly and climb along walls, and consistently modifies her living spaces to include a second level of alcoves for her to nestle into.
Cheryl is also somewhat of a prude. Ironically this comes from the fact that she's actually an ant queen who ran away from her mating flight and subconsciously adopted this as a personal defense mechanism to avoid the issue, but even without her memories the impulse to cringe at the humans' seeming obsession with sex would be there.
Lastly, Cheryl is adorable. That seems like a subjective thing to say, but BPRD tests empirically confirmed her to be the cutest thing in New Jersey... though admittedly that honor wouldn't take much. It IS New Jersey, after all.
Note: Cheryl is incapable of speaking any human languages, and communicates with a series of beeps and squeaks that somehow everyone gleans the information from. (Think R2-D2) The translation to her dialogue will always be provided in action brackets.
